Hey tandijoe,
Are you using sdv5 Beta?
SDv5 Beta has a known issue of not allowing incoming emails via the POP3 protocol. Only way to receive emails is to disable the email guard - one of the onguard tools.
Hopefully this will be fixed in the next release.
Cheers,

Yes, you can wait for the next version, which will hopefully fix the problem, though no one knows yet (except maybe the developers ;) ).
In the meantime, rather than closing SD completely, you can just disable the Email Guard - leaving the rest of the OnGuard tools running.

Currently the version your are using is a Beta version. Meaning it is not the final release of the product.
You can check out the reported issues for the Beta version from: http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44951
I believe the problem you are experiencing is:
Incompatability with Email Guard and SAV or any email using the POP3 Protocol
Status: Reported

You can always go back to spyware doctor version 4 and can be downloaded from: www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor and use this until the final release for spyware doctor version 5.
