These seem to be global so cant be changed, but what are they for something like bittorrent.they are all listed but nothing to indicate what

For Bit Torrent the rule would be:
Protocol: UDP
Remote port: In the range of 6881-6889
Ethernet type: IP
If you create this rule then Bit Torrent will work
Hope this information helped

No ,i am asking about application rules in general, not filtering rules.application rules are global and cannot be changed, and so i was asking what they are.

I don't currently have this application so I'll give you a general solution:
1. Close all your applications
2. Delete all the applications in the Application list (in the firewall)
3. Activate only Bit Torrent
4. Look at the Application rules and you will see the applications that are connected with Bit Torrent

Hi hdavid, I have a similar problem with Azureus. No matter what I do, it keeps saying that I am "firewalled" I followed the instructions above, but it didn't make any difference.
When I do a "NAT/ Firewall" test from within Azureus, is says that the port is not reachable.
I then went to "Shields-Up and tested the port I chose, but it says the port is closed.
I did not choose a port in the range of 6881-6889, but should this matter?

Let me try to clarify.
Applications Rules means that the application is allowed to go out to the Internet.
When an application goes out there is No Ports issue since the application open the ports that is need from the inside.
Ports are not blocked by the computer and they are always ready to be used. Ports closed means that there is a firewall that dellibertly blocks them from Inbound traffic to the computer that the Firewall is installed on, if there is No Firewall or similar application the ports are always opened for action.
The ports issue is an additional issue (beside allowing an application to go out) that invovled applications that need additional ports to get comunication from the outside (Internet) through ports that were not used by the application outbound (to the Internet) traffic, which is the case with P2P programs, servers, remote control, etc.
So you have to allow BT to go out using the Application Rules, and you have to open additional ports in Internet and trusted aspects to allow triggered inbound traffic to come back.
Similarly if one uses ftp server you have to allow the server application to go out by using the Application Rules, and you have to open ports 20-21 to allow inbound inquiries to the server.

Thanks for the tip.
I don't use an ftp server (at least I don't think so)
I have given Azureus permission to access the internet I have set a rule in both zones as follows,
"where the ethernet is IP
and where the protocol is TCP or UDP
and where the remote port is XXXX (the port that Azureus is listening on)
Allow
and stop processing more rules"
But Azureus still says it is firewalled. Is this correctly set up?
BTW, Azurues still downloads when it's firewalled, but it's very slow.

Also, all traffic is through a Motorola SBG900 wireless surfboard, but that firewall is turned off, so I assume it is not a factor.
Cheers,
Duckss.

The ftp was just an example since I am not familiar with p2p applications.
The Motorola SBG900 is a Modem/Router combo, so unless you disabled the Router part and configured it as a transparent modem it need to be dealt with as well.

OK thanks. Up until recently I was using Comodo firewall, and I didn't have any problems with the p2p applications. I think the PC Tools product must be a little different. To be honest, I'm not all that happy with their anti-virus eitehr, it keeps turning itself off!
