The last time I used a registry cleaner it rendered my computer inoperable.
I ended up having to do a full system restore.
The product was RegCure.
Is Registry Mechanic safe enough for someone who isn't particularly knowledgeable about the Windows registry ?
I know nothing's fool proof ... but could I feel safe in letting it make the decisions for me on what to delete and what not to delete ?
I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had any catastrophic problems after using it.
thanks

The changes that Registry Mechanic makes to your registry files are fully reversible. Registry Mechanic automatically creates a backup every time you click 'Repair' when problems have been detected during a scan.
To restore changes made to your system, you can do the following:
1. Open Registry Mechanic.
2. Click the 'Restore' button in the main program window.
3. A list of backup files is displayed, along with the date and time of their creation. Place a check in each backup that you wish to restore, and then click the 'Restore' button.
4. When the restore is complete, click 'Finished' to return to the main program window.
Note that you may be required to re-start your system to activate the newly-restored keys in your registry file. To further trouble shoot you can perform a Windows System Restore. However if the problem is not resolve after RM has performed a restore then it could be something non related to RM.
Also, if you stumble across any problems, you can always contact PC Tools support.
I hope this helps.

It would be a good idea to read through Registry Tutorial (http://www.pctools.com/guides/article/id/1/) to familiarize yourself with the Windows Registry. To directly answer your question, Registry Mechanic is very safe. You even have the option to "Restore" changes you make with RM.

How then do you "restore" using RM rstore.F8 did not work-had to use F10 which returns factory xp and deletes all my pc disk! Great fun -it took 15 hours to get stuff back from my back up disk.

To restore using RM, you just open RM, click on 'Restore' select the backup to restore and click 'Restore'
If it doesn't work, you can always try it in Safe Mode
