Microsoft is planning to include anti-piracy measures in the upcoming Whistler version of Windows. The measures would require users to register the software with Microsoft via phone or Internet the first time they installed the software and any time they changed hardware configurations.

Yep I knew this was going to happen, but I dont think I will need to upgrade to Whistler, or would that be a downgrade, and as you probably know thingz were made to be cracked and hacked.

All Microsoft and most other companies can do is make it harder for their products to be cracked. Microsoft have to many rivals and haters that are determined to disturb profits. Alot of cracks become available within days of product release and sometimes before the produst is released. This just means that Microsoft have to work harder whilst protecting their software to make more money, but eventually every big software product is cracked. Eventually their may be a process that can be implemented as secure protection but anything done within a programs source code can be in one way or another reversed.

Will whistler have any new features besides that? Do you think it will be better?

Because it is win98 Se with a Nt Kernel, it will be More hardware compatable than windows 2000, and it will be as Stable as Win 2000 also, if you are wondering if you should upgrade, that depends, are you having Hardware problems with win 2k, if not the upgrade will not be that benificial.

My 2 cents

Sorry if I disagree with a few analogies as to what Whistler/W2K are, but I don't think they're completely accurate. First, Whistler is not W98SE with the NT kernel...rather it's the NT kernel with a few more features than W2K already has. The major jump came with W2K combining NT's vastly superior kernel and 98's user-friendliness. Whistler will no doubt have more features, many probably directed towards video and sound, and a any fixes that have come out since W2K's release. In my opinion if you are running Win9x/ME there is no question about upgrading and you really should. The biggest benefit, being stability, is worth the small extra fee required to upgrade. Whistler is less-required for those of us already on the W2K bandwagon, but I don't doubt that it will be beneficial to all of us. I haven't had any hardware incompatibility errors (despite hoards of odd new hardware) but I have heard rumors of some having compatibility errors, and for them Whistler is definitely recommended. :-)
