I have Spyware Doctor Enterprise installed on a Windpws XP Pro (SP2) box on a MS SBS 2K (with ISA 2K) network. The PC has MS Proxy Client installed.

I am unable to update the database and this is now causing me major problems. I configured the settings to use proxy and supplied the details for my ISA box to no avail. I have also tried updating without the proxy details in, again no success.

I have disabled AV on the Pc - again no change.

Is there a way of downloading and then applying updates?

Alternatively are there changes I need to make to my ISA box to allow Smart Updates through.

Having trawled the WWW I have no answers and am frustrated

Regarding the Smart Update difficulties.

Could you please follow the suggestions below.

Please make sure that you check the 'Blocked log' for the ISA 2000 Server.

Is the ISA receiving an update request from SDE?

If so this means that the two are communicating. It is just that the ISA Server could be blocking the SDE Update requests?

If you find there are SDE Update requests that have been blocked, create a rule to 'allow' the update process.

The Smart Update processes that need to be added are:

- swdoctor.exe

- EntLiveUpdateServer.exe

- Update.exe – The Smart Update process that actually performs the smart update operation. This launched by SDE Server process.

Note: the full path to the Update.exe file is located in the registry under HKLM|Software\PCTools\Enterprise\Server\Products\S martUpdate.

=============================

In order to successfully integrate SDE with a firewall product please follow the steps below.

Ports: 50555 through to 50558 should be made available for SDE

Usually firewalls will log what ports programs are trying to get through and then you can allow or dis-allow this. This would be another method of adding.

For SDE Smart Updates you should be able to add the following to addresses to the Proxy Server.

www.pctools.com

and

su.pctools.com (note this one does not need the 'www.')

Also please make sure that you have allowed the 'update.exe' file from PC Tools.

=============================

In regards to adding the necessary exceptions to the Windows XP Firewall.

Usually firewalls will log what ports programs are trying to get through and then you can allow or dis-allow this. This would be another method of adding.

During the deployment of the SDE Clients from the SDE Server Console we recommend:

- Turning 'off' the Windows XP Firewall
- On the Windows Firewall Exceptions tab make sure the 'File and Printer Sharing' box is ticked.

The following file should also be added: /Windows/EMClient/EntClient.exe

Ports: 50555 through to 50558 should be made available for SDE

Once these are added you may disable 'File and Printer Sharing' by unticking its checkbox and also re-enable the Windows Firewall.

Please let us know how you go, via reply to this post.
