View Full Version : automatic connection
We have a program called weatherbug, that gives up to date weather info., one of the options is for weather alerts, I have not checked the box to allow automatic connection for alerts, but I recieved one the other day and I was not online, nor did it kick me online, I was hearing the alert sound and alerts were posted for our county, but like I said, I wasn't online. Also and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but we have a dial up server and there have been many of times that I wanted to look into outlook express w/o going online, so when the dial up connection box shows up to start dialing, I hit cancel and have to do that four or five times before the box will close and stop trying to go online. Not sure what or were to check for these settings, I've looked in Internet options and in the control panel. We have Win98SE. Thanks Kimm

Under the Connection tab in internet explorer options menue, choose the option that says "never dial a connection" so now no matter what it wont try to connect.
Most likely you left your PC and it autodialed unto the internet, and thrust me sometime I am on the net and dont even realize it.
Thanks Adrian, yeah, in my internet options I have checked, always dial my default conn. My husband might get upset with me if I change that, we have Zone Alarm installed, but I don't think I had it activated at the time, that just dawned on me. Thanks so much. take care Kimm

Hi Kimm, J use a slightliy different approch to prevent a dialup connection to be built behind my back.
In Internet options, J keep the Option "Always dial a conncetion" (if J don't, J always have to manually connect in Dialup Networking).
But in Network and Dial-Up Connections J have for most defined connections following property setting:
choose Options tab, in the upper half of the dialog you will see a list of Dialing Options. Check either of Propmt for Username or Prompt for Phone number.
The last used values will be shown for confirmation or change, but especially you have to click on Connect button to start the dialing process.
J especially have this to prevent Outlook Express connecting when J received HTML mail and the browser wishes to complete the contents (privacy concerns)

Hey Richard, I havn't had much time lately to be on the computer( I have 4 kids)(and a grandchild) but I just read your reply, actually I read it several times, I'm not sure what you mean by the settings in Dial-up connections, I don't see an options. I'm looking at Dial-up network/My Connection/properties. It's rather confusing...Dial-up connections....Dial-up network....Internet options... and so forth. ya know? Thanks Kim
