Just wondering what might cause a blank open window on the taskbar? When you click on it, to bring it up, it disappears? Any ideas? Was doing it pretty regular, havn't seen it for a few months now. Just wondering what kind of things would cause such an action. THanks Kim

no concern about security - it's the leftover of closed applications. J have never found a rule when the shell misses that a button has not to be drawn anymore. It happens since old Win95.

Yeh Richards right it happens alot on my system usually with screensavers or when the system is being maxed out with alot of applications running at one time.

Richard read my mind when he mentioned about a security problem. But there was a question asked on "the trouble with windows" website that asked about the same thing, saying this blank window appears on the restricted desktop completely defeating the purpose of implementing policies without others knowing that there's policies on the computer. Know what I mean?

sorry that once J cannot answer a problem - the one with a blank window. That surely is annoying.

The other sentence about <font color=blue>"the purpose of implementing policies without others knowing that there's policies on the computer"</font color=blue> is in my opinion nonsense.

Anybody who knows anything about Windows knows about its functionality. Even when policies aren't yet very wide spread, that will be known by the user community in some time. And of course, as soon that a functionality is not avaiable at a certain machine, the user will know that is has been taken away, so either it was an Option, or a Configuration switch or a Policy, call it what you like.

When you start using Policies, it's up to the Admin to define them in a way, that a user cannot circumvent them, and that means also to make sure that the tools he/she might need are not readily available. But if you have greater security concerns, that may also mean to ask yourself the question if you are running the proper O/S for yourself and your company. The extra license costs for running a Win2K rather than a Win9x/Me may be less than the extra maintenance cost to make the non-WinNT/2K tamper proof.
