HELP (W98)

i'm in deep trouble. i attempted to compact my registry using registry mechanic 5.0. it froze. i cannot boot into windows. everytime i restart manuallly it goes to the same place "checking system registry structure" at 11%.

is there anything i can do or is my system kaput

Boot to a Command Prompt, type scanreg and choose the most recent backup copy of the registry...

i can't get past the scanreg screen. can't even get into safe mode

Restart the PC and start holding down the Left Ctrl Key until the Windows Startup menu appears. From there select Command Prompt...(follow previous instructions)
