Not sure if it went through the first time so here goes.

I have a network that I am taking over for and I am still learning about networking. The old DNS (main server running windows server 2000 advance)server is such a POS that I have to reset the DHCP and DNS almost every day to keep things up and running. I cant even ping the machine, there is no firewall up and running. I want to move the DNS and DHCP to a new server that is ready to go with windows 2003. I want to know if there is an easier way to migrate the information from one server to another and how do I fix the old server to use as a backup (and so I can BLOODY PING it).

I also have one PC that cant access the main server but can access all the others and the rest of the PC can access said main server.

Last problem seems to be remote access doesnt seem to work inside the network to well. It times out and all the remote access are set to allow access to remote.

I basically have to rebuild this network from scratch and want to start with the DHCP and DNS so I wont have to reset it every other 2 seconds.

Can anyone help?

Is that all?. . LMAO.

A good place to start would be the EVENT LOGS and investigate why you having problems with the DHCP/DNS services. This would be my first port of call as opposed to just using another server (good for building up your technical knowledge esp. if you resolve it ;) )

You can do an in place migration from 2000 to 2003 but if it's only DHCP you wan to setup, you would be best off (IMHO) to just create on the 2003 Server a new scope for DHCP and forward/reverse lookup zones for DNS (depending on size of network). You will then get a much better understanding of your network, just be sure that you have enough IP addresses for the type of subnet you'll be choosing.

I guess the first major question would be how do I make the new server (the old one is about 15 years old actually) the main server with the IP address.

I am a total network noob and am having to learn on the job.

If you mean for it to be the new DHCP server you firt need to install the services. I would go to support.microsoft.com for help on Setting up a DHCP on Win 2003. The process is quite lengthy for me to type out.
