Hi

I am from South African, just in case you think this question is weird, things move slow here :P

My problem, is they cant browse the internet.

A friend of mine has 3 computers in his office, none of them connected with any network cable. Thus they completely stand alone

All 3 has there own modems and all 3 use the same dialup account, they cant be connected at the same time, cause they all use the same telephone line to connect thus only one can be online at a time. They don’t share files so it’s not like a virus could have got on the other 2 if one was connected, beside the one work always and was only turn on after the problem on the other two to see if it work on it. And all 3 has up 2 date Norton Antivirus running on them. No new programs have been added for at least the last 5 months.

The dialup connection works it establishes the connection, I can download and send mail in outlook and I can even update the antivirus. I can go into command prompt and even ping some websites etc, thus everything is saying the internet works. However if I open Internet explore (even tried Firefox just in case there was a problem with the internet explorer) it just doesn’t work. It says at the bottom website found, waiting for reply but it just stays on that it load like 5 little loading bars at the bottom of internet explorer and stays there. It eventually comes up with a “Read Error (104) connection reset be peer”.

I don’t know what else to do anymore I tried uninstalling the antivirus, no change, was on the phone with the ISP they can’t give me a reason either. The ISP even test the account to see if it works correctly and it did how ever I can get it to work on 3 different computers. I tried a different modem as well, no luck, reset internet setting to default, cleared all history and cookies etc.

2 of the computers have XP Home on and One has Professional on it.

What else can I do?

Please help!!!!

You should check your Modem Log. Here are some links:

1. <a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ietopten.mspx>How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues</a>.

2.<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;298931> Turn Off Third-Party Browser Extensions in Internet Explorer</a> (will prevent some spyware programs from installing on your computer).

3. Perform a Full Anti-Virus scan. Be sure your anti-virus SW is last updated version (virus database may be freshed daily).

4. Perform a Full Anti-Spyware scan with at least all following free scanners. Fix all in red, then restart computer and scan again; scanning and fixing in <a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true>Safe Mode</a> may be a good idea.
