on a 2000 server, some user created a file with a very long filename (basically started typing it until the buffer overlfowed). Now, of course, I cannot delete it and this "little game" has caught on with other juvenile users

I had experienced a similar issue with a Novell Netware server juvenile users. The only way I have found was to delete such file from MS-DOS command prompt using 8.3 short filename.
Chkdsk could help on W2K server.

Thanks. Was unable to do this since the long filename was also displayed in the command window. Was able to use rmdir /s though.

dir /X command could show short filenames in 8.3 format (for the sake of completeness).
