I suspect this is a registry thing, but you may know better.

I have discovered ( I usually use the Firefox browser) that IE 6 cannot load properly. I just get the basic page and icons, but that is all that happens.Nothing tries to get going, no attempted load of home page, no moving icon. If I click on Internet Options for Tools, nothing happens, I don't go anywhere, nor do I get any result from the 'about Internet Explorer' tab. It isn't that the machine is hung, just that the page I get for IE is minimal and inert.

I went to Add-Remove to see if could effect a repair, but there is no entry there for IE6. This is why I think it might be a registry problem.

I have tried downloading IE6 from the web, but all that does is see that all the files are there, thinks its job is done and says goodbye again. I tried to download IE7 Beta, but Firefox couldn't find the download site. I expect Microsoft require the user to use their own browser for such things as they do for updates.

So, am I stuck? If I load IE6 off a CD, will it make any difference. I don't think so as the files are all there.

I do not know enough about the registry settings to know what to look for - can anyone advise please?

many thanks.

:)

Try running IEFix.

Tom , thank you for that - useful little tool. It did not work so I have to try something else, but I will keep it for future needs. I also found out that Internet Explorer does not necessarily appear in Add-Remove in XP, so that is interesting, but does that mean there is no longer a repair facility?

Anyway, I appreciate your help :)

IE 6 can't be deleted from XP as it could be from Win98. As the repair tool didn't work you have limited options remaining. If you have the Microsoft XP CD you can do a Repair Install which should fix IE6. You would have to re-install the Windows Updates but all your apps.,settings, and personal data would be saved.

You might also browse through Sandi's Site which is dedicated to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express issues.

Tom, I was ahead of you there and opted to try and do a repair, got to within the last few minutes of setup and then got stop messages. I have spent the rest of the time trying to get back into Windows, on what I think is an unrelated problem, to do with Nvidia Graphics drivers. Anyway, I am back in now, but the IE6 problem is still there.

I wouldn't be that bothered except I need it for updates. I can see a complete reinstall of the OS approaching :(

Thank you for your help anyway; appreciated. Going to bed now ( yawn).

Back again.

I remembered that I had turned off BITS a couple of days back, to try and resolve a bit of a hang when I first boot up - I thought Wauclt was being difficult and as I had already turned off automatic updates, didn't see why it should appear in Task Manager when I boot up. Anyway, somewhat pink cheeked I went back into services and turned BITS back on, and found that when I clicked on Windows Update, a browser window opens and everything behaves perfectly. I typed in the URL for Google and brought that up, and it was all as it should be, but when I close that browser and then click in the icon for IE6 to open up a fresh window, I am back to the inactive page again. Hmph. Any ideas??

I really am going to bed now!

Usually when a Repair Install fails, it is an indication that Windows is corrupted to the extent that a full format and clean install are necessary.

It might come to that because I am unhappy with other things, but for this immediate situation that threat has receded somewhat as I can update, and get a functioning IE browser by clicking on Windows update buttons elsewhere, I just can't get anything working via the blue IE icon. Very odd, but not unbearable, especially as I don't often use IE anyway. I would just like to know what is happening ( or rather, why it isn't).

Great! This is also kind of interesting as the IEFix application I linked in my first post to you is supposed to re-register the .dlls!
