Can't connect to net (WXP-Home)

I can't connect to the net and when I try to send/download mail in Outlook I get the error code 0x800ccc44. This seems to indicate windows socket failure thoud I don't understand what that means. I can't find any solution to resolve this. Anyone got any ideas or even better, instructions ? Cheers.

Thanks for that, I'll try tomorrow. As I can't connect to the net from the problem pc will it be OK to download the fixes to cd on my laptop then run fom the PC ?
