Hi,

First of all, I want to say that yes, I realize I did bad. I should have gotten a router. A friend was like "You don't need a router, just get a switch and have your main comp act as a router". Sounded simple to me, and cheaper, so I did it. Bought myself a cheap switch of amazon, hooked it up to my other comp. Run the network wizard, nada.

So, I read through all the information, and windows tells me I should buy a second NIC. So I bought a second NIC, and install it in my main computer. Still nada.

That being said, I realize that I should have just gotten a router... but this is what I own now, so if anyone can help me make this work I would be much appreciative.

Here is the setup: DSL Modem -> Main Computer (XP Home) -> Switch -> Secondary computer (XP Home).

Here is the problem; Internet isn't being shared. Right now, if I turn on both NICs in the main computer, the internet dies. At one point I was very close; the second computer was getting an IP, I could get internet on the Host computer, and I could transfer files to and from the Host comp and the Client comp. Now, somethin broke again, and I'm back to either/or.

I'm running McAfee Firewall, set to allow all connections on my LAN.

If anyone can help I would be very appreciative. Please let me know any additional information I need to post and I'll put it up post-haste.

Thanks,

-Chronocide

First. You dont need the switch. Just use a cross-over cable.

Second. Make sure there is no default gateway setup on the second network card -- the one connnected to the other computer.

Thank you, I will check that when I get back from work. I'm using the switch because eventually I'm going to hook up more clients.

I made sure it doesn't have a default gateway, none of the nics do except for the one hooked up to the net. Still nada =\

The second PC should be using the first PCs IP as its default gateway....

So if the Internet connected computer's second network card has 192.168.1.1 as its IP and the second computer has 192.168.1.2 as its, then the second computer should have 192.168.1.1 as its default gateway.

OK, I tried setting that nic to have my main computer's second nic's IP address as it's default gateway, but I'm getting the same problem.

The other computer is getting an IP, it can share files to and from, and I'm showing the shared internet connection in my connections. But when I try to go to a website on either computer, it tries for a little while and then gets a 404.

You know, I just realized, I can still use MSN and other internet things, just no website. Maybe that's a DNS error?

UPDATE: It's definetly a DNS error. I can ping 208.66.97.1 from both computers, but if I ping www.penny-arcade.com I get nothing. How do I go about fixing this?
Edited by Chronocide on 07/22/06 18:07.

Have you configured any DNS server on your second computer? Run command "ipconfig /all" on your first computer and pick addresses of DNS servers. Then define same addresses to your second computer.
