I just bought a brand new computer and installed XP professional sp 2, spysweeper, and mcafee antivirus, as well as a few applications.

When I connect the computer to the ASDL modem/router, all the TCP IP settings are fine. In fact, other PCs plugged into the router have similar settings (just IP address different) and the other computers have no problem connecting to the internet. However, I cannot resolve domain names. The DNS server is the router , and this works for the other PCs. nslookup times out. I can ping the router, and connect to router set up screen, but go no further than that.

However, when I configure a macbook pro to share its wireless internet connection through its ethernet port, then plug the PC into that, everything works fine. The setup is the same - DHCP server with everything automatic. However, it actually works through the mac.

I am totally mystified.

The router assigns itself 192 168 1 1 and starts dhcp lan addresses at 192 168 1 33. The mac starts itself at 192.168.2.1 and assigns addresses from 192.168.2.4 onward.

Thanks for any ideas!

Have you also checked DNS serevr setting. Run "ipconfig /all" and check that all computers have similar settings. Test also if you can connect using ip addresses. So try for example to access www.winguides.com using ip like "http://65.61.180.80/".

Yes, I have a PC notebook also connected directly to the 4-port router. The PC notebook reports the same DNS server, 192.168.1.1, that the desktop that refuses to get internet connectivity reports. However, the notebook is able to access the internet without a problem.

In fact, the reports given in response to ipconfig /all are identical in all respects except Description, MAC address, and the last byte of IP address and the lease date/time.

I cannot connect to or ping any IP addresses directly. Also, I cannot even ping other computers on the local network. I can ping the router, only.

I am utterly perplexed.
