I wonder if any of you guys can figure out this one.
My flatmate has Win2000 with SP4 with a cable internet connection. I have attached my computer (WinXP SP2) to it with a cross over cable through the ethernet cards. We can now browse each others computers but I can't seem to connect to the internet on the winXP machine.
On the 2000 machine only Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked for the internet, Enable internet sharing is checked on the sharing tab.
For the LAN on both machines Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer sharing, NET BEUI protocol, internet protocol (TCP/IP) are checked
I have gone through the setup procedure for a home/small office network on the XP machine and it is set up to go through the 2000 machine to connect to the internet. It says run on other machine but it doesnt work on 2000 I believe this is always the case when going to 2000.
ipconfig on XP machine says
IP Address 192.168.0.199
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
ipconig on 2000 machine says
Ethernet adapter internet
(You dont need those internet works fine on 2000)
Ethernet adapter LAN
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : Blank

What about DNS server adresses? Have you tried accessing some web site usin ip-address, for example "http://65.61.180.80/" to access winguides? If this works, you have improper DNS server settings. Run "ipconfig /all" on w2k and pick DNS server addresses.

Thanks for the help. I can't connect however even with a numerical address.

You would need to run them the other way around.... connect the internet to the XP box and run the Internet Connection Sharing program from the XP box on the 2000 box.

Thanks alot :),
Unfortunately the win2000 machine must be directly connected and theres no chance of upgrading to XP.

I was wondering is there something which prohibits this kind of setup and is there any other way of sharing the connection without using a router, an internet connection sharing program for example?
Also
The XP machine has been used on another network and I ran a System File Check on the 2000 machine and it was ok.

Did you <a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230082/en-us>enable TCP/IP forwarding</a> in the Win2000 machine?

TCP/IP forwarding was not enabled. I changed the dword to 1 then rebooted both computers and tried a ping from the XP machine to a numerical web address still nothing. I checked the registry it still had a dword of 1.
Damn sounded really promising.

I noticed that on the XP machine there is a tiny padlock above the the Local Area Connection icon. Is that bad?

In Win2000, enable the default gateway in the Ethernet Adapter to be the IP address of the cable modem, as well as the DNS servers...

In XP, enable the default gateway to be the IP address of the NIC of the Win2000 (192.168.0.1) and use the same DNS servers that your ISP provided you...

Can you PING the NICs IP addresses from both computers?

Ok I changed the settings as you suggested. I know that the ISP has provided a dynamic IP does this change things?
Also pings went through winXP to win2000 and vis versa
