Netwrok failure backup (All)

I have just inhereted a project for coordinating the installation of a network for a new securities broker-dealer. In all this I need to develop a systems failure backup as well as be aware of the hardware and software requirements to support the clients.

Needless to say my experience in this matter is little. Can someone give me some direction on the considerations for the systems failure backup plan and what type of hardware and software I should be considering?
