I have a small network with 2 Windows XP computers, 2 Windows 98 Computers, and 1 Ubuntu Linux Computer.
The XP computer called "Main" has a Cannon S630 attached to the parallel port, and is shared and all of the other computers can print to it.
Yesterday I purchased a HP LaserJet 3050 All-in-one, with scanner, fax, and printer combined. I plugged it in the "Main" computer loaded the drivers, it appears to scan and print great. (Based on the fact I have only printed about 10 pages so far.)
I want to share the printing. I went to the printer, pressed the sharing tab, and enabled print sharing.
The icon for the printer now has the little hand that indicates the printer is shared. (Just like the Cannon S630.)
I go to the Windows 98 computer and get the Add Printer Wizard, and the Cannon S630 is under Main, but no other printer is listed (shared).
I turn off the firewall, that makes no difference.
I try to type in the name manually //Main/HPLaserJet3050 like I have it in the share name. A window pops up and says "This Network printer is currently offline. You can install the printer now, but you will not be able to print to it until it comes back on line." I go back to the "Main" computer and am still able to print a page. It does not appear to be offline.
So I continue and install the driver on the Windows 98 machine "Design" I use the disk and install the driver. The Driver install seems to go fine. However it still says I am offline. The print from this computer to the Cannon S630 still works, so the network and connections still work.
I try the other XP Computer.
The other XP computer "Delynda" network connected to the LaserJet 3050 effortlessly. Worked first time.
What is the secret with Windows 98? Did Microsoft do something in a update that let me do it in the past, but not now?
I do not have a domain server, everything is peer to peer.
The I have tried to reboot the Windows 98 "Design" computer, and when I go to network neighborhood I see the "My Documents" and "SharedDocs" folders that are shared on "Main", but only "Cannon S630" printer. The Laserjet 3050 is not listed.
I have also rebooted the "Main" computer.
Any suggestions?
Kip
