I set up a home network to share files between my Windows XP Pro computer (COPPER) and my Windows 2000 pro laptop (gold). First I set both computers to the same workgroup and enabled NetBIOS.

I then connected to the network. After this I shared a folder on each computer. On my Win2k laptop I right clicked the folder "shared," and set it to share. For my permissions I selected all permissions, and set the group to Users. I then added the username I use on XP to the Win2k computer.

On XP I right clicked the folder 'dvd' and set it to share, giving all permissions to everybody.

On my Windows XP Pro computer, I was able to successfully navigate and modify the contents of my Win 2k laptop.

However on the Win 2K laptop it does not work. I go to my network places, and then select computers near me. Two computers show up: Copper and Gold. After clicking copper it said that it could not open the device because the path was not valid.

Now if I go to computers near me the laptop will not recognize Copper at all -it only recognizes itself.

As a side note, this is laptop is using WiFi and I upgraded it from Windows 98 recently rather than do a fresh install.

Try pinging the ip address of both computer from one another.
command is
ping (192.168.0.1) there are no brackets and the numbers in bracket are your own specified ips.

If they work then check that they are in the same workgroup
and lastly check your security settings. Firewalls etc

Peace

Is there any firewall/antivirus software installed on the WXP machine? Check if windows firewall is disabled. Try also access the WXP machine from W2K through Start -> Run -> \\ip_address_xp

Go to Start/Settings/Control Panels/Network and Dial-up Connections

Go to properties of the LAN connection. Make sure file and printer sharing is there and checked. If it is not there you can add it.
