Win2000 & USB CameraMate

I have a new Win2000 machine . I am trying to install a Microtech CameraMate(USB) on it. The manufacturer says it is W2K compatible and provides a driver. When I install it, all goes fine until during the "Found new hardware..." time. Then the screen goes black and the machine reboots. It will continue to do this until I unplug the device.

I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling with no difference. I have looked at the registry after the uninstall is complete and there are still fragments of it in there. Would this be what is causing the problem?

FYI the device worked fine on a Win98 machine for almost a year.
