Thumbnails

I have searched the forum but cant find the exact answer to my problem.
I have ME and for some reason when I click on a folder containing images and choose the thumbnail view the square boxes appear but no picture . Only bmps have a picture. I have tried all options of customising the folder ,choosing all possible variations but to no avail. It happened after a crash and though i used the restore feature the problem has not gone away. any ideas anybody.
