We are trying to get a user set up with Adaptec software for a Plextor Cdrw. The version of Adaptec is Standard 4.02 and we have been trying to get answers from them, even though this is registry related. The problem is that the device and software work fine when the administrator is logged in and when the user has admin access. when we restrict the user for some reason the software generates hardware errors. It does not see the device. I know that this may not even be a registry issue, but I have read this forum often and just thought that I would run this by the registry Gurus.

If I am wasting your time sorry. :)

this seems to me to be security related and not a direct registry problem.
Please allow me this nasty question: is your software documented and to be written for WinNT/2K or only for Win9x/ME ?

It is written for Win2k, that is what is so puzzling... And when the user is signed in, the software does not acknowledge the Plextor cdrw... However as admin the software does and works just fine...

have exactly same problem with hp cd/r/w 8200 series. adaptec says they wrote it that way on purpose-called software a 'single user version'. bull! huh? all the win9x and nt4 software worked for all users......go figure. btw,, have the same problem with ms photo editor with win 2000. have to be adm to work it. any ideas?

We could not get past the Win 2k security, so we installed NT4 on the guy's system and told him to live with it... :) According to Adaptec it is a Windows Issue and I am thinking they are right to a point, but they whould not advertise the product for Win 2k if they have not tested it in all the possible configurations...

Broen - I actually came across this problem personally about 5 months ago. The answer I got from Microsoft/Adaptec/HP (who made our CDRs) was that "Windows 2000 has a new security measure that prevents normal (non-administrator) users from copying any data to removable media." Basically they want to make sure no normal user copies Windows or Photoshop or something to a disc from the machine. So I guess they expect them to run to their IT Administrators everytime they want to burn a CD for backup or whatever.

I was able to work with Adaptec to create a workaround however. They sent me a modified service to install that runs as any user but the service then calls the CDR software (which then runs as system). The service file they created was for Adaptec 3.5 however.

Perhaps Adaptec CD Creator 5.0 will have a fix....though the people I talked to where not too optimistic :(
