by passing entry password in xp (WXP-Home)

hi. a friend of mine recently bought a pc at a police auction. when they turned it on, they are immediately asked for a password. obviously, not knowing the previous owner, they don't know the password. does anyone know how to bypass this? we've tried to boot in safe mode, from a boot disk, etc...

any help would be appreciated.

Is it a BIOS password? You might have luck taking the BIOS battery out for a few minutes to reset the BIOS settings.
