I have searched 20 or so pages into this forum (ps to sysadmin - google site searches for everything but the forums a pita) and found little information regarding what to do if the security patch from Windows Update fails to load?
One person here had a problem but I did not see an answer:
http://www.winguides.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=secwin&Number=100152&page=10&view=collapsed&sb=5&part=
but it was not at all similar to what message I see in my installation history. Then further on I found that (http://www.winguides.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=secwin&Number=86177&page=15&view=collapsed&sb=5&part=) someone else was told to load the same security patch 3 times even though the installation was successful.
My issue (not that I expect a reply given the lack of information in the previous posts i encountered) is that there are five (5) failed security updates in my installation history. Should I worry? The five were prior to the most recent updates.
I even found a post where someone was trying to get the updates for a laptop on a DUN in the UK and while there was a reply to the message, the suggestion seemed to say that no updates were necessary for win98 since dec 2003.
The patches that failed to install are:
Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 Series (KB885492)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 Series (KB885492)
Security Update for Windows 98 (KB896358)
Security Update for DirectX 9 (KB904706)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB905915)
Now what is interesting to me is that the more recent cumulative update was successfully installed.
1. Is microsoft still supporting the win98 os? Or have I just been downloading (at Microsoft's O/S's insistance) the updates for the wrong O/S?
2. If the security patch fails to install, should I worry to the point of seeking out a win98 discussion forum to ask a question that is most likely moot and resolved with updated virus definitions, a router/firewall or firewall software? Is that worry mitigated by the fact that more recent security patches were successfully installed?
