I have 2 laptops. One is called Diana (WinXP Pro) and a another one Fiona (WinXP Home). Both laptops connected wirelessly through a 2wire modem/router. I have configured both laptop using the Network Setup Wizard. Using residential gateway option. Shared folders showed up in My Network Places but both laptops cannot browse the network using 'View Workgroup Computers'. It'll prompt something about I have no permission to use this network resource.
I did some searching and someone says that it's due to the NetBIOS being unavailable. I don't want to enable NetBIOS as I know it will cause a security vulnerability. So in the TCP/IP NetBIOS setting, I use default, which I understand it will enable NetBIOS when DHCP doesn't configure the NetBIOS. I don't know what is DHCP and how to configure it.
I didn't get this problem when I use to have my desktops but my desktops use cables instead of wireless.
