IE v6.0.2900.2180 (latest build)

When dowloading .mp3 files .mpg and .mpeg files, associated applications no longer open to play file. Instead, IE status bar indicates that IE has downloaded the file from the site, but niether plays the file in IE or in the OS assocated 3rd party app.

For instance, when surfing the net for new music, I click on a legit hyperlink to an .mp3 file. Two days ago, Winamp would have opened and the file played in Winamp. But today, the file is downloaded, IE notes download copmlete in the status bar but Winamp is not opened and the file not played. This also occurs with mpg files, which won't even play in windows media player.

--I've verified that for the file types of note (mpg, mp3) are associated with the apps I want.
--No new applications have been installed before or after issue occurred
-- rebooting doesn't correct the issue
-- uninstalling and reinstalling the 3rd party app (winamp) doesn't correct
-- 3rd party app preferences are associated with file types
-- apps are not "in conflict" over file types. e.g. Winamp pref include mp3 assocation. Meda Player pref is not assocated with mp3 files.
-- popup blockers, toolbars and other BHOs have been deactivated with no correction to issue

This is recent problem. I sense that IE is the culprit, but I cannot discern what setting may have caused this. Perhaps the IE activeX settings? I'm a trained techie, but am not 100% confident I understand those cryptic pref. options.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any advice to share to resolve this?

This problem fixed itself with the XP security and OS patches released around 2/15/6.
