What method did your mate use installing XP Pro ... upgrade or fresh install. If the first approach was taken all the problems and glitches of XP Home are brought forward to XP Pro. The best approach is to back up all your personal data to CDs, insert the XP Pro install CD and have it reformat and do a clean (fresh) install.

"beacause it wasnt a genuine xp pro and the validation key was coming up as invalid"
That's exactly what the problem is. You either have an OEM, corporate or pirated copy of XP Pro and Microsoft's Authentication process detects that and prevents you from updating or upgrading.
Yeah, it's a pain in the six to restore XP Home, but for the sake of security it really needs to be done.

You're system keeps crashing because your friend upgraded an illegal copy of XP Pro on top of a Dell OEM version of XPO Home.
To re-install XP Home with Dell's restore XP CD just pop it in the CD drive and follow the prompts. It's pretty straight forward. Also, make sure you have the Dell Resource CD handy for drivers and apps. if needed.
If Dell, HP and the rest of that clan included a genuine XP CD with each computer most of these sorts of problems could be avoided.
