Hello i just wanted to share something that i found out today. I was trying to find out how my freinds kids were changing her admin password all the time on her xp home system.
I rebooted into safe mode and discovered another account named administration that is different than the default one that windows loads when you install the os. You can go in there and delete or change the password on the default normal mode admin account easily.
Make sure to go into safe mode and password that user account as well to prevent this.

Very true.
This can also be done by launching the Computer Management Console (Right click on 'My Computer' > Manage), Expanding Local Users and Groups, selecting Users and changing the password for the administrator user account.

Well this persons kids were running from a limited user account. They wouldnt be able to go into 'manage' to change anything from the limited account. They must have either been using a tool like erd commander or using the safe mode method. See most people who buy home computers dont know all this stuff and the manual you get with xp home doesnt describe any of these issue. Ther should be a chapter in the book you get with xp home that explains that issue of the main admin password. OR they could just do what mac does. I have been running my system from a limited user account because it is supposed to be the most secure way for reasons i am sure you are familiar. Yet with a limtied account in xp programs become non-operational my printer stops working just from switching from teh admin to the limited etc. Ad system restore on top of that and you have one buggy system, i mgith as well do a clean install of the os and forget about the limited its just a hassle with windows.
Edited by ckonrad on 02/01/06 14:29.
