I've encountered weird software problems, but this one takes the cake.

Specs - Windows Service Pack 2 (firewall off)
Dell 8250 - 200 Gigs of diskpace
756 mb RAM
ATI Radeon, does the job, don't know the specs
to sum it up, a heavily spruced up Dell 8250, that works fine

So my dad's using the computer, internet is working, turns it off, then turns it on later, and the browser is not working.

I have a connection for sure. I called Cablevision, they read my modem, my computer reads it(the little network icon). I did all this command prompt stuff to test connectivity, and it is connected.

However, when you type something into the adress bar, it tries to load up, and dies. BF2 doesn't work, neither do any update functions on any programs. The only thing that worked was my file sharer, but even after uninstalling it, everything else is still not working.

The Cablevision tech guy thought it was a ds(I think that's how you spell it) server error. Or basically my browser, IE or Netscape can't convert words to number adresses. Turns out the setting were right, it can convert.

Like I said, we did a lot of command prompt stuff, and everything was normal. I have an IP adress, it's sending packets, but when you do C:/ping www.yahoo.com, it tells you no response. Nor does any other site work.

Finally, I typed in the numerical adress for yahoo.com. It was real slow, but the website actually came up with half the buttons working. Of course no buttons on the site worked, but it was strange.

I'm posting this through the same modem, so the connection is fine. The tech guy suggested a windows problem. Turns out my warranty is long expired, and I'd need to pay 99 dolars for advice. The Dell lady said to run a windows file check through run in start menu. I did, and all my files are fine.

Maybe you should uninstall your network driver and reinstall it.
then.. (if you can..) open the box, take the network card out and turn on and turn off. then put the network card back. It should self detect your network card and reinstall everything back for you.

The possiblities for your problems is some network drivers might have gone bad. You need to reinstall it. Your DNS is no good as the Dell lady may have said. However, normally, it should be set for automatically. There is no need to enter it. But you can ask your ISP to give your the DNS address and enter it yourself to see if the problem is fixed.
