I began having this problem yesterday morning. IE will not let me have more than one IE window open. For example, when I click "open in a new window" on a link, the webpage will open up, but the IE window that was currently open will close. Also, if I am at a website and then open a new IE window the old one closes and only my new IE window will be open. I can not think of anything I downloaded or anything else that I did that may be causing this problem. Thanks.

yes this is the same thing that happened to me...last night i installed MS Office Student & Teacher Edition 2003, as well as downloded and installed any and all updates available for it...i did not notice the problem lst night, simply because i only needed the one update window open, but today as i attempted to open an additional IE window after i already had one open, it close my first window and opened the new one...this probably wouldnt bother me as much if it didnt exit out of the first window, but since it does so, it disable the ability to go Back to previous pages...
i tried the suggestions posted on the given Windows page, but the problem still persists...i think it must be somthing to do with the Office installation, but other than that i am clueless<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by EliCarter on 01/30/06 15:06.</FONT></P>

You all should run <a target="_blank" href=http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm>IEFix</a> and see if that helps.

OK, one more shot /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
Open Internet Options > Click the Advanced tab > Navigate to the Browsing section > Un-check the checkbox labeled "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" > Click OK

I haven't used Office for years so I'm not familiar with its Options, Settings and Preferences. If you have not done so already, go through all those with a fine-tooth comb to see if any of the options deal with or have to do with IE windows.

You might look into this 'undo' tweak from kellys-korner.com
At the very least, you can use the info in the tweak to LOOK at the registry and verify that any options you selected from IE or XP tools in this regard took effect in the registry.
It is a direct registry edit that SHOULD basically do the same things as using the higher-level methods mentioned earlier. In other words, re-assert the choice to create a new IE window.
WARNING. If you don't know how to use the registry editor, or are new to this, I advise NOT doing this until you gain more experience.
Editing the registry can result in changes that turn your computer into a paperweight.
The slightest error can cause major problems for you.
Backup the registry in its entirety before using any tool which allows you to modify the registry, even if you don't INTEND to make any changes. Accidents happen.
This 'undo' tweak is #69 at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
"69. Reuse Same Window Internet Explorer-Undo"
Advice. When I download a '.reg' tweak of this nature, I do NOT immediately apply it to my registry. I look at it first, using a text editor. This helps me verify that someone hasn't hacked the site and replaced valid tweaks with maliciious registry code.
