View Full Version : re-installing iexplore.exe / IE6 (WXP-Pro)

I deleted iexplore.exe (from IE6) last fall as a security measure, but I just bought the software QuickBooks, which needs IE 6 to run. So (unfortunately) I need to re-install IE6. But when I run ie6setup.exe, it says I have a newer version of IE6 on there. Fine. But when I try to run IE6, it cannot find iexplore.exe, because of course I erased it earlier. Is there a way to completely erase remnants if IE6 without harming the OS (so I can then re-install), or alternatively to re-install iexplore.exe somehow into an existing yet skeletal IE6? (I just downloaded the XP SP2 hoping that it would repair IE6, but no luck..)

Thanks for anything,
Jason

Ah! Yeah IE6 is merged with Windows XP, so you can't really COMPLETELY remove it.

But you can try doing this....

Go in to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Click on 'Add/Remove Windows Components' on the left. Go down to Internet Explorer and uncheck it. Click Next, and let it do its deal. Restart. Go back to this place and check Internet Explorer. Restart.

Should work now!

Brady - Much appreciated - tho it didn't work, it still looks for the file iexplore.exe, which I must have deleted - I would either have to totally re-install XP or install a new version of IE 6 (or IE 7, when it comes out), correct?

A <a target="_blank" href=http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx>repair install</a> should fix IE6. You will need to re-download all the Windows updates.

Tom - Thanks, but my ThinkPad came with everything pre-installed, ie no XP CD. I could revert to factory settings, but that would cost me a day or two in backing up and re-installing everything. I have a win98 pc I'll use the software (for which I need IE6) in the meantime, but I guess I would need to revert to factory settings to get IE6 back, eh? Oh well, I knew I was permanently deleting IE6.

I believe you could use any available XP Cd to perform the following:

From: "<a target="_blank" href=http://www.activewin.com/tips/tips/microsoft/winxp/advanced/7.shtml>How To Reinstall Internet Explorer</a>" (in WinXP)

Quote
1. Insert the Win XP CD
2. Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

Press ENTER
End of quote

That's a shame. I've built my last two systems (haven't had a store bought rig since 1995) so I sometimes lose track of the fact that folks who purchase vendor assembled systems pretty much get hosed in the operating system arena.

At some point in time you really need to back-up your personal files on that ThinkPad and then use the IBM restore CD to regain IE6. You could use FireFox for everyday browsing, but you need IE6 for Windows Update.

Tom, I don't use Firefox but <a target="_blank" href=http://labnol.blogspot.com/2005/11/windows-genuine-advantage-supports.html>http://labnol.blogspot.com/2005/11/windows-genuine-advantage-supports.html</a> suggests that there is an available plugin for Firefox that allows folks to use Firefox to get MS Updates.

That ought to make a lot of Firefox users even more happy.

I don't use Firefox either. I've never had any problems with IE6 and will keep using it until IE7 hits the street.
