I would like to know how people feel about the firefox browser. I'm thinking about switching to firefox instead of using IE 6. Just need feedback please. Thanks Bear

I have been having a horrible unsolveable problem running IE 6 for two months now and disgusted by it, I downloaded Firefox to try it. I LOVE Firefox and with my DSL service it has been lightning fast.

I hate Internet Explorer and how hard it is to repair it !

You can safely use Firefox, whilst leaving IE6 untouched.

To set Firefox as your default broswer on a PC, there are two settings you need to change. First, look through the Properties of your Internet connection (ISP account) and uncheck "Internet Explorer should check to see that it's the default browser". Also, go into Add/Remove Programs and, on the LHS, you'll see a link to a group of Program Default settings. There, you can set Firefox as your default browser. Obviously, you need to download and install Firefox first. Note that IE will still start up if and when you connect to the Windows Update website, and that's correct.

Generally, just leave IE6 alone. Just download Firefox to your Desktop and execute the install of Firefox from there. You can switch back to IE6 at any time. If you run a software firewall, you'll need to set the firewall up to allow Firefox to access the Internet, once you've installed it. Otherwise, the firewall will block it.

Please note that Firefox is under continual development and new versions of it are being made available every month or so. Mozilla have just released v1.5 Firefox but unfortunately v1.5 has proved to be very buggy. So, go for v1.06 or 1.07 instead.

I myself have given Firefox a good old workout this last year. It does have some very good features but, at the same time, it has a lot of bugs and more and more security loopholes are being found in it. IE6 isn't quite as bad as some people make out, you know..

I used to think Internet Explorer was fine, but I found some modifications you can make to Firefox to make things super fast.

Here's some tips:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to Make Firefox Load Pages Faster
1.) Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
2.) Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading. Alter the entries as follows:
3.) Set "<font color=green>network.http.pipelining</font color=green>" to "<font color=green>true</font color=green>"
4.) Set "<font color=green>network.http.proxy.pipelining</font color=green>" to "<font color=green>true</font color=green>"
5.) Set "<font color=green>network.http.pipelining.maxrequests</font color=green>" to some number like <font color=green>30</font color=green>.
This means it will make 30 requests at once. [The default value for this setting is 4]
6.) Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-&gt; Integer. Name it "<font color=green>nglayout.initialpaint.delay</font color=green>" and set its value to "<font color=green>0</font color=green>". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
7.) If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Dude et al,

Yes, there's no harm in changing those Firefox 'config' settings, but personally I found they made no difference at all to how fast pages downloaded or presented. I do have a very annoying delay when I go to a new webpage, and sometimes even when I go to a regularly-visited webpage. The latter is unusual, as one would expect the webpage to be presenting more quickly through it being retrieved from the browser cache. I think my own slowness problem is due more to the processor in my broadband router than anything else.

As for that Preloader, yes, something like that is warranted. Otherwise, when you first open Firefox, it takes ages to load. But I've personally deliberately avoided installing that Preloader, as I can recall the Firefox forum reporting that it caused several other bugs.

As I stated earlier, when you use Firefox, you have to accept that you're being used as a guinea-pig for its development. Remove any thoughts from your mind that it's going to be freer from bugs than IE, because it just ain't true.

I used GreenBrower, IE based browser. Why? it is because it has lots of features, you can save tabs as group and so on... Firefox is good if your IE is being attacked. Use it as a backup or non security proof browser.
