after upgrading to win2000 I had a problem using my cdburner - I went and downloaded a .reg file fix from the adaptec site (my scsi manufacture). this file was suppose to set my settings back to their original win2000 settings. Once I did this I lost the use of my cdrom drive. You can see it when you go to systems - but there is an error message (both for it and the burner) saying registry may be corrupt. I've rebooted several times and tried uninstalling the drive.. Nothing seems to work..Can anyone please help me with this - thanks

well I just posted the exact same problem yesterday and still have no solution. My only solution was to format and reinstall windows. I checked 1000 diffferent places and there is suprisigly enough alot of people with the same problem but noone seems to know what to do about it.Wish I could help U but I am in the same boat. For now I am sittin here with Win98SE installed waiting for someone to come up with a way to fix this.

Unfortunately I did. Couldn't find any other way of doing it. Beleive me I checked everywhere. And since there were no responses from the forum then I had no other choice. And damn do I hate 98.

What's the URL for the original fix you downloaded from Adaptec, it might be something funny with hidden control characters in the file.

the url is http://ask.adaptec.com/cgi-bin/tic/solution?11=000505-0000&130=957539692&14=7&2715=0&15=4&2716=&57=faq&58=console
the article number is 000505-0000 on the www.adaptec.com website
I actually posted the file on this forum. Its about the 6th or 7th posting.
Its so frustrating ... the system can see the drive and if you use a boot disk (for win98) you can access it in dos mode.... otherwise it just sits there with a code 19 error - possible corrupt registry error.
Also I called adaptec tec support seeing how they provide the fix and they told me sorry contact the cd burner manufacture ... go figure
thanks for your help - greatly appreciated

OK, try this, it might work (it sounds like you've got nothing to loose either way!)
Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Cl ***\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}] and delete the entire key.
Cut and paste the text below into a new text file and name it cdrom_fix.reg then double-click it to merge it into the registry.

I tried the fix but it didn't seem to work (same error mess.) so I went and restarted with last known good configuration. After I did this I wnet to the cdrom folder and relized that my .sys file was not there (I had removed it when I uninstalled my cdrom) so I thought I would try your fix again then reinstall the driver for the cdrom, but when
I go into the registry there is only controlset002, 003 and 004. With 003 being the default and current controlset. Do I just change the \controlset001\ to \controlset003\ in order to retry your code? Also I noticed that I had to set permissions to full on a subfolder called properties in order to remove the specified key. Was I correct in doing so. thanks again for all your help

hey Chaos i finally got the fix to work. I was just merging the file over and over again. I didn't realize that you had to first delete the entire key before you merge the file.

hey Simon thanks a lot. I got it to work. I didn't realize that you had to remove the entire key before merging the new file.
thanks again.
