Here's the downlow: (working with win98SE here)

>Open any win98 window and click the "View" menu.
>You should see "Folder Options". Click it.
>Next, select the "View" tab.
Here's what YOU, with your non-screwed up Windows98, should see:

-A white background.
-A list of expandable option folders, with a checkbox next to each option.
These options allow you to define whether you see file extensions, hidden files and other important stuff like that.

Here's what mine looks like:

-A gray background.
-A list of expandable folders with NO CHECKBOXES next to each option.
-When I click or double click these options, nothing happens.
-Furthermore, in an attempt to possibly fix the problem, I clicked the "Restore Defaults" button, thinking it would solve the problem. However, this made it worse by making hidden files hidden(imagine that) and making file extensions invisible. And now I can't change it! How annoying.

Please help! This sucks!

I am looking at Win98 registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Explorer\Advanced I see both settings for Hidden and HideFileExt
I see both with settings as
Hidden 0x00000001 (1)
HideFileEXt 0x00000000 (0)
If this helps

Thanks, report_2, your settings were the ones i was looking for. I still can't change the settings in the traditional way, but you were big help. Thanks.

This is just a suggestion. I did it a few years ago to fix a wierd problem, but not like you described, but it is caused from a corrupt copy of either EXPLORER.EXE or SHELL32.DLL. Using DOS---DO NOT USE DOS MODE---YOU MUST REBOOT TO DOS---, either backup your system first or copy your current files of the above mentions to another location such as CD or secondary HDD or FDD if you can. This is strictly if you do something wrong and need to restore, unless you want to just rebuild your entire OS. Replace the current copy with a fresh copy of explorer.exe and reboot. If it didn't fix the problem, replace your copy of shell32.dll. Order doesn't necessarily matter, but this is the way i recommend it.
