My Disk Cleanup tool is stalling during scanning. Here's a step by step of what's happening.

First, start up is taking significantly longer than usual. After I select which disk to scan it brings up the status window. At this point it seems to be working normally as my hard disk light is lit up. After about a minute the hard disk light stops and the cleanup never progresses. It never gets passed "Compress Old Files." The status bar doesn't move either, although I never recall it moving when it was working.

I've let it idle over night just to make sure I wasn't being impatient. My normal scan time is around 3-5 mins. I have a fully updated norton security that has been run multiple times since problem arose. Also, my cpu usage is at 100%. I don't recall it normally being maxed out like this all the time. Maybe this is affecting system functions. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jman

The culprit is "Compress Old Files". Same thing happens in XP as well. The option is unnecessary and here's a way to get rid of it. Go to Start > Run and type regedit in the Open window and click OK. This opens the Registry Editor. On the Menu Bar click Edit > Find, type Compress Old Files and click Find Next. Compress Old Files will come up in the right widow pane ... click once to highlight it and hit the keyboard Delete button.

Hi! I read this post as I have the same problem w XP. I followed your instructions using the regedit. It searches for the Compressed Old Files but does show anything in the right pane window? it just says finished searching for files? any thoughts? Thanks.

Try entering "Compress old files" (not Compressed) in regedit's Find window. Delete the highlighted key.

it could also be due to a temporary file that is corrupt. if a temp file is corrupt, disk cleanup won't read it properly and therefore the program will halt. try manually deleting all the temporary files making sure you deleted the corrupt one too. then run disk cleanup again making sure sure it finally works properly. if that doesnt work, instead of going into the registry and deleting the key, just unselect "compress old files" in disk cleanup and then run the program. don't mess around with the registry if you don't have to. good luck
