Hi hoping someone here can give some pointers or advice on dial up versus dsl. Currently am on dial up and in the past this has not been an issue because I had a dedicated phone line for computer/fax. Recently I had to cancel that phone line and not that getting into the internet is really a big deal in terms of pages loading except for I can be online for hours at a time. This puts the main phone at no one home (have call waiting) My main concern is that with dsl your always online and basically open to virus's worms, hijackers and trojans, Whereas with dial up your connected to the internet when you dial up. I do have norton internet security 2005 and all is current on that program. So is there reason to fear dsl? besides the cost. :) Can some one give more information on dsl? Plus my fax is in my computer, I have the Winfax pro 10 ver program which I love and no one so far seems to be able to tell me if that would still work if I changed to dsl. thanks bunches

First of all, the fear of being hijacked, hacked has nothing to do with dsl or dial up or cable. If your pc is on all the time, you are risking your pcs being hacked. Of course, nowadays, people put firewall, virus protection software, anti spyware software in their pc. That eliminate lots of those worries. If you have dsl, you don't have to leave your pc on all the time. It is just that, when you turn it on, it will be much faster than dial up.
As far as fax goes, you can still use it while using dsl. all you need is a spliter, and your dsp provider will give you couple of filter and it will not affect your phone or fax use.
I used to have cable, but due to the fact that my house has problem with the wiring, I always got disconnected and there is nothing to fix it unless i rip off the house and replace the cable. So I switched to Dsl and happy ever after....

If yo use lot of internet, dsl connection is much cheaper than dialup. Of course it depends which country you are living. At least in northern Europe dsl is cheaper. I don't know about US prices. And of course dsl is much faster.
Anyway you need good firewall and virus and spyware scanners. And then be careful when browsing unknow prirate, [censored] or warez web sites, because they might contain new spyware which your scanners doesn't detect.
