recently I received a message regarding virtual memory something about not enough and something about windows adjusting something. I missed it because a cat had jumped onto the desk at the time. I have 512 mb ram. Is Virtual memory different? Should I be increasing my memory?

That's a reference to your paging (swap) file. Go to System Properties >Advanced tab > Performance Options > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory and let us know your current settings.

Hi, I had installed memorex express it label maker program and was exploring the features when this happened. Here's the current setting:
'Total paging file for all drives: 756 mb '
under change, it states:
paging file for selected drive
space available 93258 mb
custom size
initial size 756 mb
maximum size 1512 mb
then:
Total Paging file size
minimum allowed 2 mb
recommended 754 mb
currently allocated 756 mb

Try this:
Put a tick in Custom size and set both the Initial size and Maximum size to 1024, and be sure to click Set before clicking OK.

thanks that seemed to do the trick.
Although I am confused about the virtual and the ram memory. What is the difference? Should I still add more ram memory. the system does appear to run a bit slow, and have done every thing else I could think of to help the performance and speed of programs opening etc.

Hi, katt ...
Here's a definition of RAM vs. virtual memory (ignore the last sentence, Webopedia can get outdated, but the definition is right on). The general rule is that it never hurts to add more RAM providing your system is capable of accommodating it. If it is, add another 512MB of RAM, just make sure it is the same kind as already installed.

Cool, great thanks. but here's the tricky part but I think I just figured it out. I can go up to 4GB according to my notes.
I have a 512 mb ddr sdram memory
speed is 2700 mb/sec
so just to make sure I would need to purchase
xxx ddr sdram 2700 mb?
ps do you know anything about dsl vs dial up?
thanks bunches

katt,
That's correct on the RAM. Also, If you can identify who manufactured it (Crucial, Corsair, etc,) it is best to buy the upgrade RAM from the
same source.
PS: DSL is hugely faster that dial-up. Here is some background on broadband Internet connections.
