First of all, nothing was touched. Everything was fine while I was browsing. All of sudden, socket error for email and I lost the internet connection. I called verizon isp immediately, check the line, it is fine, check the modem, it is working. I hooked my pc back directly to the modem and it works fine.

The Verizon Tech support guided me thru how to set up the router (which I knew already). When entering the username and password correctly, it
is just saying cannot connect pppoe server. So, that may determins my router is bad. Then, I tried to hook it back directly to my dsl modem and work fine.

Fortunately I have a hub and I am using DSL. I am able to use internet in quick recovery.

My questions are as follow.

a. Can I use the router port that goes into the modem originally, insert into the hub and set up the router that way?? Actually, I now am connecting it that way, but I am getting the same error. I am doing that because i thought I won't interfer my internet on other pc.

b. My wireless pc can get a very good signal from the wireless router which I hooked it to the hub. However, the way I do it now is the connect thru proxy from other main pc. If my router is bad, would I still be able to do that?? I am thinking it is more like the pppoe server won't let my router get authenticated for some reason. Any idea?

Anyway, I am now hooking up my dsl with the hub and my router is off and on when I need to surf from the wireless pc. But of course, this is a temporary solution. I do not wish to buy another router and end up the same thing. By the way, I did try to use my old linksys router and it was the same result, cannot connect to pppoe server.

My wireless router is also linksys.

sounds more like you have the wrong user/passwd information for the ppoe server. Verizon tech should have been able to check if you make an authenication request of the ppoe server.

Since you have to authenicate to a ppoe server and you only get one ip address you can only have one pc on the net at a time.

Absolutely not, I tried it hundred times, but no problem using the direct connection.... same password.

so, must be something else, either my router.. or i just don tknow..

did you note your mac address of the pc that works when directly connected and put that mac address in the wan settings of the router?

If your ISP has coded your mac address to your ip address [called ip reservation] then the reason your router isn't working is due to its different mac address.

Your router should have a field for you to put in the mac address of your pc to spoof the mac to the ISP.
