Ok here is my problem:

To sum it up I installed jetco bestcrypt , then used the program without re-starting my computer. A few days later I uninstalled it, then re-installed it again, and then restarted my computer

Upon re-start windows would boot up then go to the “windows 2000 screen” halfway through that screen the keyboard and mouse would flicker and then die….It then takes me to the logon in screen, which I couldn’t log onto because the keyboard would not work…..After a few moments a Norton prompt would come up indicating that “C was corrupted and to run scandisk”

Well I booted to the recovery console, logged in under administrator and ran scandisk…That didn’t work. Then I ran FIXBOOT…that didn’t work…Then I ran scandisk /r ..That didn’t work.

Well after one of the above steps something else happened to windows: it now says “Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt /winnt/system32/config/SYSTEMed

Did some research and found out this is a bad hive or something? Any way I tried the suggested remedy from the Microsoft website to no avail….” system.bad ….ren system.alt systemalt.bad” etc

And things have now gotten worse…When I go to log into the recovery console it no longer asks for an administrator password…. Just goes right to C:WINNT and windows no longer detects WINNT on the hard drive L….however I still can get to WINNT from the recovery console.

Ok my guess now is im hosed….Im not going to get into windows and will likely have to completely re-load right?….Well is the ANYWAY to recover the files on the hard drive?
I read up on maybe installing windows on another partition or making the old hard drive a slave drive or something?…ANY ideas/ info would be much appreciated…thanks!

I'm not all that familiar with W2K, but if it has a "repair install" (doesn't wipe your files and apps.) like Win XP you might try that approach. If not, you are probably in deep doo doo. /images/forums/icons/smile.gif About all that is left is to contact one of those data recovery outfits ... usually fairly expensive. Google will bring up a number of choices.

You can slave this disk to another HDD if you have one available or you can install Win2k to another directory on the same drive. Just call in WINNT2 or something similar during setup.

This will essentially create a dual boot machine, one working and one hosed. At least you'll be able to get at your files.
