I recently installed a new hard drive with WinXPPro. My old hard drive with Win98 is now the slave. Is there any simple and inexpensive way to access the Win98 registry on the slave hard drive to retrieve some information to be put into the WinXPPro registry?

Not really, the Operating System generally has to be running for the Registry to be accessed by the built-in regedit.
A .dat file can be opened in Notepad and file names can be read but there's a lot of machine language instead of the actual keys.
If possible put the old hard drive back in as only drive and Export the Registry from within regedit as a .txt file, may give what you need.
If the entries are associated with programs it's best to re-install those programs.

Thanks for your response. The programs I'm trying to retreive were installed over the interent (those programs where you don't download an installation file but the program automatically installs over the internet. Unfortunately, the vendors want me to purchase a newest version rather than help me re-install the version I had when I stopped upgrading.
I was hoping there was a utility that could read the user.dat file. Guess there isn't.
Thanks again,

If it's a Serial Number you might be able to find the text but since the keys themselves are mostly garbage characters it will be difficult.
