Does anyone know what would be likely to happen if I replaced a 500 mhz Celeron cpu with a 700 mhz Celeron cpu in a motherboard that maybe certified for only up to a 500 mhz processor?

it may work... but you will not get 700mhz suport due to slow bus speeds. it may work, but don't go around saying that your compy is 700mhz due to older mother board bus speeds.

Thank you for your reply... but...
I am unsure of what you said.
Do you think that i will suffer damage to my pc?
Thanks for your reply.

If the 700 MHz CPU is not compatible with your motherboard (or visa versa) you could possibly fry the board. I would stick with the 500Mhz CPU. Besides, the performance differential would be negligible.

To amplify a bit...
PC is a 6 year old "refurbished" Toshibia V3100 with a GVC motherboard. It was originally equipped with a 366 mhz Celeron CPU.
Toshibia built the V3100 with 366, 400, 466, 500, 667 and 700 mhz Celeron CPU's.
When I replaced the 366 mhz Celeron CPU with a 500 mhz Celeron CPU it recognized it immediately and has been running it flawlessly ever since.
The only documentation I have been able to find on the system states that it will handle up to a 500 mhz CPU. It also states that the maximum amount of memory installable is 256mb and that the FSB is running at 66 mzh.
I am currently running 512 mb of PC-100 RAM and I think the FSB maybe running at 100 mhz, although I get conflicting statements from the various system analyizers that I have tried.
The 700 mhz Celeron that I have is of the same generation and voltage as the 500 mhz currently running.
Your advice is most probably sound.... but I just gotta try it.

I know that feeling ... Damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif
If it blows up, you have a perfectly good reason to buy or build a new system!
