The Win98/98SE CD will allow re-installing over the top of itself [known as a dirty install] but you may have to re-install some programs because the Registry may get changed.

thanks; liked the quotes better.....but to be more specific, i meant reinstalling win98 from the setup program on hard drive; putting win98 in RUN slot brings up the windows 'setup' program. I have a full CD also, but wouldnt reinstalling from itself clear out some garbage(old school programs that werent removed correctly and the like)...thanks again

You really do need the setup.exe file in the root of the CD to do it right. The file in the Win98 folder is not the same, only about 6KB and must be a pointer back to the one in the root.

ok, thanks again, but what would happen just running the setup again from RUN win98? leave a bigger mess?? isnt this the CABS/OPTIONS version of reinstall? did that once years ago

No harm in trying it but as I mentioned, the setup.exe file in the Win98 folder is different from the one in the root of the CD. At worst you'd get an error message.
