Well lets see I have this computer and it's annoying me for I'm not sure what the preblem is ok Symtoms:
cannot connect to the internet
every time I try to connect to a site DNS error on the browser
what I tryed:
first checked all settings in TCP/IP it's on a router so I give it a IP so it does not have to get one from DHCP
IP:192.168.1.101
set all the right DNS info and rebooted no luck
so I pinged the loop address 127.0.0.1 pinged fine
then I pinged my other machine (WinXP Pro) 192.168.1.100 pinged fine
I went to network naighbourhood and checked I could acces my win xp pc fine so internally every thing worked fine tryed to ping it from my win xp pc and worked fine
so now I'm thinking ok mabie it can't get passed the router
so I tryed pinging www.yahoo.com
and www.cars.com
both retuned ip addresses and pinged fine so now I'm lost so I tryed in run typing msinfo32 and whent to tools repair internet explorer thinking mabie it's an IE problem..... rebooted and still nothing so I uninstalled IE 6.0SP1 and reverted to IE 5.0
still nothing so I installed IE6.0 back still nothing
also nothing else workes MSN... nothing..... installed oohh I had also installed AVG found some trojan virus es...but removed them so now I'm thinking mabie one or more of the viruses blocked off some ports but wouldint that block pining aswell.... anyhoo if any one else has any good ideas it would be greatley appreciated before I start pulling my hair out mabie I overlooked something or mabie it's right in front of me and I can't even see it any help would help thanx guys

If it is indeed the DNS error, two things you could do.
First, enter DNS manually. Check with your ISP what DNS numbers they are or check out from internet.
Or
Second, uninstall and unplug your network card all together and reinstall the driver.
Good luck!

Here is what I would do..
Get another NIC card from other pc for the time being and put it in this problem pc. Don't worry, your pc will detect and NIC card, just install that. And try if everything else is pingable and working.
If not, I have other questions...
First, Are you able to use other means of internet? I meant like Instant messengers likey AIM, Yahoo, MSN or ICQ.. If so, your NIC card is okay. Just DNS problem or Browser problem.
Second, Do you have Netscape or Firefox installed? Maybe you want to use those browser to test. Sometiems IE messed up does not mean your NIC card has problem.
Post back your answer.... Good Luck!

look if you can access and ping the other machines on the network messing with the nic is the wrong course of action.
Zonealarm doesn't deal with ports and your issue isn't a port issue. All you need is port 80 for http.
1. can you http from this machine to the router?
2. can you http from a different machine to the router?
3. can you ping the isp's dns servers?
if not can you get into the router and test the wan connection?
4. did you mention that other machines can access the web via the same router?
5. have to looked at/renamed your HOSTS file so you know its not redirecting your requests to 127.0.0.1?
6. have you disabled ALL firewalls so you know they are not in the testing mix?
Simply put if you can ping addresses on the internet and the only message you are getting is a dns error, you know your hardware is fine
I see no mention of running antivirus or a spyware checker like spybot/adaware. If you are infected and broadcasting on the internet this would saturate your pcs bandwidth and this could result in a timeout that gives you the dns message.
There is even the chance your isp is having dns problems. This would be confirmed/denied if another machine on the lan can access the internet just fine.

Awnsers:
1. can you http from this machine to the router? NO
2. can you http from a different machine to the router? YES
3. can you ping the isp's dns servers? YES
4. did you mention that other machines can access the web via the same router? YES OTHERS CAN
5. have to looked at/renamed your HOSTS file so you know its not redirecting your requests to 127.0.0.1? NO NOT SURE HOW TO GO ABOUT THIS
6. have you disabled ALL firewalls so you know they are not in the testing mix? YES
I did have some viruses and adware but did a check with AVG lates update and Ad/aware could not use spybot as it want's to update by net and don't know how to update the defs manually but cleanned everything else out
NO I canno get onto MSN Yahoo........ect..
and if in a commant window I ping www.yahoo.com
or some other site it returns fine

You say your removed some nasties, they may have messed up your winsock. To fix that download winsockfix (http://) and run it on the PC that can't connect.
If that doesn't work double check your ISP's DNS server IP's. On your other PC go to the routers status page and see what they are. You could also add your router's IP as a third IP no. under DNS. That way if the first two are incorrect the router will forward your isp's DNS to your PC. Also if you do use static IP's you don't want to assign an IP address that is not inside of the scope your router gives out. Usually your routers DHCP gives out IP address from 100 up. 192.168.0.100 for example. Use IP addresses below 100 to avoid conflicts. It's a good idea to leave DHCP enabled on the router just in case you mess something up and can't connect. You can then set your NIC to automatically optain an IP and go see what's up.

I made a typo in my above post, if should have been "is inside" instead of "is not inside".
Also if you do use static IP's you don't want to assign an IP address that is inside of the scope your router gives out.
