Yesterday evening/night, I was installing a LiteStep shell for the first time, and I noticed that one of the times I rebooted (one of many, but not the first), my sound wouldn't come on.
I thought it was the drivers, which I updated to no improvement. Then I thought it was the shell, which was otherwise working fine. I switched back to Explorer, and the problem persists. I even tried reloading the drivers for the sound card (ESS1988 Allegro) and removing/reinstalling it.
Turns out, the speakers and card were functioning properly. What was happening is that the volume will go up, but will then immediately start sliding back down to zero. Even when I mute the sound, the slider continues to plummet, and the mute toggle unchecks itself. I'm honestly quite frustrated about this.
I attempted to call HP technical support, but since my comp is 4 years out of warranty, they asked a bit too much money for me to spend on the ONE problem I've had in years.
Any ideas?
