When I run msconfig and select which programs to load at start up, I see some repetition of programs. One entry might say "Registry (Machine Run)" and the other might say "Registry (Machine Service)". What is the difference? Should there be only one entry? If so, how do I remove the extras? Clicking the "clean up" button doesn't change anything.

If the entries are not worded precisely the same, they are not duplicates (extras). What you have to decide is what items you really want/need to open at startup
This <a target="_blank" href=http://castlecops.com/slet-u.html>Startup List</a> will help you sort things out.
My feeling is that only items that are necessary for a program to operate correctly should be in the startup group. Any others slow the boot process and consume resources.
