I've just taken delivery of a used laptop and have been busy installing various stuff.

However, when I installed my Broadband USB modem, I can access it through IE6, but the shortcut on the desktop doesn't want to know.

The icon recognises the shortcut as an 'Internet Shortcut', but double-clicking on the icon brings up the "Which program do you want to use" box. I then select "Internet Explorer" and "Always use the selected program". This successfully invokes IE6, but for some reason does not remember the setting for next time.

The properties box shows the address as "HTTP://192.168.2.1/"

It is extremely irritating as this works on my Desktop.

Can anybody help please?

The Internet shortcut could be corrupted. Create another IE shortcut to the desktop and see if it works.

Hi Tom,

I've deleted the shortcut umpteen times and re-created it and I've also created others to different addresses. They all work when set up as 'Favorites' inside IE, but don't when set up as shortcuts on the desktop - yet the Shortcut Icon recognises it as an Internet Shortcut.

I've even uninstalled and reinstalled IE, but nothing has changed!

This link is a <a target="_blank" href=http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=316240324&photoID=316879333&security=Pfootk>screenshot of my IE-6 shortcut configuration</a>. Plug them into your IE shortcut properties. I think that "http ...." address you mentioned is the address to your router's online control panel.

Hi Tom,

I tried your link and this is the response....

"An error has occurred.

You do not appear to be the owner of this album.
Make sure you are logged in.

Please push the Back button on your browser to correct this problem.
Thank you. "

You are correct, the address is my routers control panel. However, I've tried putting in a 'normal web address' and still get the same problem

Bummer! Ya know, you may need to do a <a target="_blank" href=http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RI>Repair Install of XP-Pro</a>.
