A friend of mine gave me a boxed Norton AV 2003 Pro, since all the good free AV are charging now I decided (reluctantly) to install this bloated thing.
Before downloading the updates,
I did a test scan of C: to be sure that all is "well" and it finished the scan without a problem.
I went on line and downloaded all the NAV updates and rebooted,
and did a c: scan, but now this thing is freezing my Rig (WinXP pro) every time I try to do a C: scan,
spybot and AddAware (updated) didn't find anything, that could possibly cause NAV to jam my Rig.
Please do not suggest alternative AV's software!
I'm only interested in resolving this NAV jamming my Rig.
Please don't suggest alternative AV's, I'm only interested in resolving the NAV jamming my Rig issue...

I hate to tell you this but NAV AV 2003 Pro, itself, is most likely the problem. Uninstall it and see if your problems are solved.

Tom it is obvious and I know that,in the past NAV never gave me a problem, but I did uninstall it and installed NAV 2003 on my main Rig with dual boot, w2k and wxp on the w2k system, NAV 03 scanner works well but on the wxp it doesn't Why is that....Also you are not offering any insights on why is this happening, other then uninstall it and the problem will go away !....

Sorry, I should have also asked if you have installed SP2 on your system. NAV has problems with SP2, especially 04 & 05. I used NAV for over 10 years, but after the huge problems I had with the bloated NAV 2005 I completely removed it from my system and now use AVG 7.0 Professional (the paid for version) and love it.

Now,before folks jump all over this post, there are many who don't have issues with NAV and Symantec is supposed to have a fix/work-around for the SP2 issues. I just grew tired of messing with it.

Tom I didn't install sp1 or sp2 never needed it my Rig is running fine like it is,(and maybe better without NAV 03)
maybe that's why after the downloads I've problems with the scanner, NAV install the downloads with the fixes for SP1 and SP2,but that wouldn't explain the fact that it is running fine on Win2k.....

I can't answer that one. As good an OS as XP is (IMHO) it still has its little idiosyncrasies. Symantec has tried to optimize (for lack of a better word) its NAV programs to be as compatible as possible with XP's major updates SP1 & SP2. That may well be why NAV was causing issues on your system. Also, W2K is not WXP so the fact that NAV 03 works fine with W2K has nothing to do with not working properly with XP

Tom thx! You are absolutely correct about w2k and NAV 03,but in posting this problem I was hoping to get "if possible" more of a clear and definitive answer to this problem....

Hey, simpatico ...

I can't give you a precise answer as to why? Perhaps another forum member might be able to do so. I'm not even sure Symantec can give you a straight answer. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

As I mentioned earlier in this thread I had huge problems with NAV 2004 & 2005 after over 10 years of successfully using NAV and therefore switched to another AV program. I just don't have time for this kind of stuff and if a software program isn't easy to use and causes me grief they don't get my business.

Tom that's a good common sense, I came to the same conclusion even before reading you post, I've uninstalled that problematic NAV 03 from the xp system, then cleaned up the registry of it, now I'm ready to try some good but free AV and I'm open to suggestions.../images/forums/icons/smile.gif

You might want to check out several. AVG Anti
Virus (free version) is a good place to start.

Also, check out www.majorgeeks.com, they list a huge selection on the left sidebar under the anti-virus link.
