-Can you ping the other computer?
-Did you try to connect from the Command prompt (i.e. net use r: \\the_other_machine\shared_directory)?

pinged the computer....100% ping success rate, network is still unfunctional./

firewall on the computer I am trying to connect to is disabled from services. is there a possibility of network not functioning for that reason?

Thank you.

Ok.
1. How did you ping the computer? by ip address or by computername?

2. try to connect to the computer by pressing start, run and type in \\ipaddress and hit Enter

if this is successful then you got a DNS problem

Make sure the Computer browser service is started in the machines and that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is turned on in the TCP/IP properties...

1. Computer Browser service is started on both machines.
2. I tried changing the Default setting to NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Advanced TCP/IP properties, but that did not sove the problem.

I am able to connect from PC2 to PC1.... but not the other way around.

thCA:

1: I pinged the machine by IP address.
2: When I made an attempt to connect to the computer(IP) by using command prompt, I received the same exact message I described in my first post.

PC1 has WinXP pro SP2
PC2 has WinXP pro ................could that be causing this problem?

Thank you.

Is this a small network between two hosts or is it a Domain network?

If it is a small network between two hosts then try to create a new user on both of the computers with administrative privliges. Same name and password....

Here is a diagram of the network setup:

............................[PC1]
........................../
[modem] > [router]
..........................\
...........................[PC2]

2 computers, router: Linksys

Both COmputers are logged on as Administrator.

Hi again..

1. I know that you have turned of the firewall service, however check if both computers listens for tcp port 445 (type netstat -na in cmd)

also try to type this command to open tcp port 445 for incomming network traffic:

type: (in cmd)

netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable

2. are u able to connect to the computer by telnet?

in cmd: telnet ipaddress

telnet uses port 23 so make sure that u open port 23 and that the telnet service is running.

3. do u have ipsec enabled?

Hello, thCA......

1: Both computer are listening to tcp port 445.

In this step.... I think I have some good info to resolve this issue. The command to open tcp port to incoming traffic worked fine for one of the computers. However, the command DID NOT work for the computer which I cannot connect TO on the network. I received the following message in cmd after I typed in the command:

"WARNING: Could not obtain host information from machine: [computer]. Some commands may not be available. The dependency service or group failed to start.

The following command was not found: firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable."

As I was suspecting, it looks like some required service is not turned on.

3. I ran into a problem in this step also. When I went to "Advanced TCP/IP Setting">[Options] to enable IP Security Protocol..... the only item in the list was "TCP/IP FIltering", there is no "IP Security"

Thank you very much

We had a problem like this and eventually tracked it down to Drive Image 7, we uninstalled it and all was well - so presumably some programs can cause this. However, we now have a similar problem on another setup, and like you, can’t find any solution!

Cancel the above!!
I found this on another forum, hope they don’t mind me lifting it ‘as is’. - many thanks to the original contributor. Anyway, it solved our problem - hope it helps you.

"Start>Run>Regedit>Hkey_Local_Machine>System>Curren t Control set>Control>Lsa. Now open the lsa folder... check the "restrict anonymous" file, NOT NOT NOT the "restrict anonymoussam" file. Make sure the Restrict Anonymous file value is set to zero(0) and not one(1). If the value is set to one(1) change it to zero(0) by double clicking on the words restrict anonymous. From here go to file and exit. Now try to connect to this system from another system or vice versa. You may need to repeat this action on the systems on your network that you cannot connect to."

Glad all OK now - if by any chance you have any trouble with accessing sub-folders have a look at this very informative article from Microsoft - it explained a lot I didn’t know!

OK. I had the same problem THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME. I found this on another website after much searching and much heartache.

If your internet connection is working (I dont know how to troubleshoot the connection), then go to Network Connections and click on the Internet connection you are using. (Ex: wireless connection 2).

Click Properties. There is a box that lists all the settings the connection uses.

Find AEGIS Protocol (IEEE...) and Uncheck it. You may also have to uncheck "Microsoft TCP/IP Verson.." DO NOT UNCHECK THE "Internet Protocol TCP/IP"

If the other computer has that checked, do it to that one as well. Linksys is trying to cheat people out of their money by making the network setup complicated and not offering customers help. If u see any other people with this problem, please copy and paste, or point them to this post. I can email a pic w/ the instructions illustrated if needed :)

By changing the LSA folder Now the "Access Denied etc..." has vanished and I am able to see the computername and Guest account disabled with prompt asking for password...
