Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall
Look for the subkey for the program you ant to uninstall.
The value of "DisplayName" is what shows up in the Control Panel Add/Remove programs list.
The value of "UninstallString" is the path\file that is used to uninstall the software. If you have deleted any of the files referenced in the UninstallString, your uninstallation is obviously going to fail. If you have not deleted anything prior to uninstalling via Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs or the uninstall shortcut supplied by the software itself, the problem is in a sloppy uninstallation string, and about all you can do is:
Delete the folder containing the software (or the executeable and .dll file dumped in Windows folder. There may be other files strewn about, but you have no easy way to tell if they're used by other programs. I'd just leave the disk cleanup at that.
You'll then need to run through the registry.
If the software uses certain kinds of data files, you'll need to delete those extensions or point them to a different program (eg, the software is a text file editor): Do a search for that extension in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT , note the (default) value. Continue searching in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for the key called that default value. Then either delete it or associate it with another program.
Finally, delete the references to the software in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall, and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software.

I don't think you should attempt to clean up the registry yourself until you get a bit better understanding of how it works. I suggest that you simply clean the software off of your hard disk by deleting the files that you know are part of the software program.
