Is there a way to give a FOLDER truly read-only attributes? I'm trying to keep MyCometCursor from installing when my kids download games. I tried to set the attributes for the folders it installs to read only, but I doubt that's going to work. Is there a better reg tweak to prevent specific programs from installing (bad apps,...)?

The only way to stop that piece of crap from automatically installing is to open Internet Explorer, go to Tools>InternetOptions click the Security tab, click the Custom Level button. Under ActiveX Controls & Plugins -- Download signed ActiveX Controls-- choose Prompt.

OK, thanks. Will that recognize the CometCrap as separate from the intended download & allow separate download control? I did edit the comet.dll, clear it & set the read only attribute. That should give it fits when it tries to install, no?

What I explained to you controls ActiveX downloads, that's it (These are the ones that normally install to: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files)
You can click a link and download or choose Save Target As...
It won't affect these at all.
How did you edit the comet.dll (internally?) and if you don't want it why is it still on your system? Setting a read-only attribute will do nothing.
It has to be uninstalled properly through add/Remove Programs.

Comet Cursor is referred to as "spyware". Spyware is usually integrated into the application. To prevent or remove the spyware from the programs use will render the program useless.
Removing a program that contains any spyware does not also remove the spyware. (A little self protection registry tweak of it's own)
Ad-Aware removes spyware from your computer (freeware). As is Opt-Out.
Real Player 7 comes with Comet Cursor unless a custom install is performed.

I edited the comet.dll with a text editor - just cleared the contents. My thinking was that the next time comet tries to install itself, the .dll file will already be there in read only mode & that comet might not be able to install a new one. That's the only reason it's still on my system. The rest of the comet cursor program has been removed. Yes, I do use Adaware & Optout. What do I know? I did follow the suggestion setting prompt mode for activeX downloads too.
The games that are downloaded with comet cursor attached are still usable once comet cursor is uninstalled. It just seems to get reinstalled automatically with certain downloads. Thanks for the help!
